1 / 52 Svek — Reimers Tumlaren Sloop
When a truly beloved classic one-design gets paired with the right owner, the result can be a thing of beauty. Svek, Tumlaren #59, is a living breathing example of this. Designed by Knud Reimers in 1933 and built at the Kungsör yard in 1936, she has been loved for more than 40 years by the same dedicated and knowledgeable steward. A professional and elegantly done recent structural rebuild has addressed the challenges created by the original innovative construction methods. Mr. Reimers specified a galvanized steel frame at each station with steam-bent wood frames between them. While this delivered a light and stiff hull structure, deterioration of the galvanized frame heels over time creates a challenging repair scenario. Svek’s backbone structure has been rebuilt with live oak frame heels and floor timbers, many new white oak frames, and some planking where removal was necessary for frame/floor timber work.
In addition to the above work, all of her standing and running rigging has been replaced, her hull, brightwork, and spars were stripped to bare wood and refinished, a simple and reliable electrical system was installed, a custom fabricated removable bronze outboard bracket was fitted, as well as other needed items (new spreaders and jumper struts, on deck hardware rebedding, re-covering of cabin top, and more). After this work was completed, Svek won Best in Show at the 2022 WoodenBoat Show in Mystic, CT.
She sits on a custom fitted trailer. She carries a sail inventory consisting of two mains, four jibs (storm, 110, 130, and 150), and three spinnakers. She conveys fully found with anchor and rode, dock lines, Honda 2.3hp outboard, an 8’ fiberglass tender, and lots of other equipment.
She’s ready for her next 90 years.
