Potpourri — Bristol 31.1 Sloop

Outstanding provenance of design from a collaboration between sailing icon Ted Hood and designer Dieter Empacher of John Alden Yacht Design, built by Bristol Yachts. An excellent example of the mid-1980s cruiser-racer suited for both distant cruising and handicapped racing.

Interior Layout and Accommodations

  • Interior spaces of Potpourri nicely finished off satin varnished teak-faced marine plywood bulkheads and joinery trim, varnished teak and ash cabin sole under foot, medium blue cushions on settees and berths and contrasting white overheads and interior cabin sides providing reflected natural light.
  • Furthest forward is chain locker with thru-bulkhead access from forward cabin.
  • Next aft is forward sleeping cabin.
  • Forward sleeping cabin well-ventilated with large opening hatch (equipped with screen) over head, opening ports (with screens) port and starboard in cabin sides and electric fans located port and starboard at the head of each berth. The forward cabin is well lighted with natural light provided by portlights and over-head hatch with additional (electrical) lighting supplied by stainless steel dome lights mounted the aft bulkheads (port and starboard) at the head of each sleeping berth.
  • Berthing space for two persons individually in a V-berth configuration or together by using the V-berth filler to create a true double berth.
  • Forward cabin overhead is of White gel coated FRP liner.
  • Interior hull sides are covered by way of varnished teak sheathing.
  • Cabin sole is White gel coated FRP with Teak & Ash insert.
  • Chest of drawers and hanging locker to starboard aft of berth.
  • Varnished teak storage lockers with cane-faced sliding doors above and outboard of the berths both port and starboard.
  • Furthest aft in forward cabin are privacy doors both port and starboard allowing access from the forward cabin to the head area (port) and passageway to main cabin (starboard).
  • Passageway aft to main cabin, head area and main cabin areas all have White gel coated overhead FRP pan liners and cabin sides.
  • Passageway aft and main cabin areas have Teak and Ash cabin soles.
  • Head area accessed by way of privacy doors from forward cabin or passageway from main cabin. Head area bulkheads, joinery faces and counter tops are of White high-pressure laminate with teak trim and locker fronts. Storage lockers located outboard and under-counter. Other head area features include stainless steel sink basin, hot and cold pressure water, Raritan manually operated marine toilet, vanity mirror, towel bar and covered TP holder. Head area is well ventilated with opening port (with screen) in cabin side, dorade vent overhead and electric fan. Head cabin sole is White gelcoated FRP pan with teak grate insert.
  • Outboard of the passageway between forward and main cabins is storage space in hanging locker and chest of drawers with laminate countertop furthest forward with sitting space opposite the head at the foot of the starboard settee. Like the head area (opposite to port) the passageway area also has an opening port (with screen) in the cabin side and dorade vent overhead with brass reading lamp on the aft face of the hanging locker providing light for the sitting space.
  • Main cabin includes spaces for dining / socializing, navigation and galley area for meal preparation. Main saloon (dining and socializing) is laid out with settee’s both port and starboard with storage lockers and bookshelves above and outboard along with additional storage under the seating platforms. Formal dining for 4-6 persons is done at a bulkhead-mounted, fold-down teak dining table which has additional storage option behind the table when in storage position. The overhead on the main cabin areas is White gel coated FRP pan construction with varnished teak handrails mounted overhead. Main cabin bulkheads, joinery fronts locker doors and drawer fronts are all of varnished Teak. Main cabin sole is of varnished Teak and Ash. Ventilation to main cabin provided by overhead opening hatch (with screen) and opening ports in cabin sides port and starboard with additional ventilation provided by electric fand mounted on port forward bulkhead and aft starboard bulkhead (in galley area). Natural light provided by overhead hatch, opening ports and fixed port lights in cabin sides with additional lighting provided by brass reading lights, gimbaled kerosene lamp and overhead / under deck area lighting above book shelves and galley areas.
  • Aft (to port) in the main cabin area is the navigation station with chart storage under the desk top and storage locker outboard. Also under the desk top is a well-insulated ice box for storing of perishable foods.
  • Aft (to starboard) is the galley with china and glassware storage outboard, dry goods storage under counter, stainless steel sink basin with hot and cold pressure water along with manually supplied freshwater and a gimbaled stove.
  • Aft (on center line) is the companionway ladder providing access to above decks areas with easy access to engine area behind doors under the companionway ladder.

Hull Construction

  • Fin keel with skeg hung rudder underwater configuration
  • Solid FRP (fiberglass) hull construction of woven roving and chopped matt FRP with gelcoat exterior.
  • Moderate fin keel with encapsulated lead ballast
  • Topsides are original gelcoat (in good condition) with White hull accented by painted Light Blue double stripe boot stripe and single cove stripe.
  • Bottom coated with Blue anti-fouling paint
  • Skeg hung bronze and FRP construction rudder with bronze rudder stock and heel fitting
  • Propellor located / protected in aperture between skeg and rudder
  • Bronze thru-hull fitting for ship’s mechanical and plumbing systems (under waterline)
  • Polycarbonate thru-hull fitting for electronics impellor and transducer (under waterline)
  • Chrome bronze vents for ship tankage (transom and topsides above cove stripe)
  • Teak rub rail with stainless steel half-round guard rails on port and starboard topsides.
  • Hull joined to deck by means of inward-facing hull flange overlaid with FRP decks.

Deck, Cabin and Cockpit Construction

  • FRP decks, cabin and cockpit with end grain balsa and solid plywood coring
  • Exterior deck finish is gelcoat with White smooth areas and contrasting Light Gray non-skid surfaces.
  • Hull and deck joined by deck overlapping inward-facing hull flange.
  • Deck and hull joint thru-bolted and bedded with adhesive compound
  • Deck and hull joint further fastened by thru-bolting of teak toe rail port and starboard.
