1 / 52 Cady — Frank Loud Cutter
Frank Loud of Quincy, Massachusetts, was a shipwright at Fore River Shipyard in Quincy during WWII. After the war ended, he worked at Quincy Adams Yacht Yard until they closed in 1968. During his time at QAYY and thereafter he ran his own shop in which he built seven of these cutter yachts of his own design along with other vessels. Cady is the last of the Frank Loud Cutters and was built specifically to be his personal family yacht. The six cutters built prior to Cady were similar, but Cady represents the final development and refinement of these boats.
She’s traditionally constructed of mahogany carvel planking over steamed white oak frames and white oak backbone with bronze screw fastening throughout. Deck frame is white oak with marine plywood deck and bulkheads. Finishes are predominantly painted, but there’s enough brightwork on deck and below to add warmth without becoming your life’s work.
Everything about Cady tells the story of a high-quality original build followed by consistent and diligent stewardship. There’s nothing showy or ostentatious about her. She’s a refreshing example of a wholesome family cruising boat. Her gigantic cockpit allows plenty of elbow room for a daysailing crowd. Her wide and uncluttered side decks offer ease of movement to a spacious and efficient foredeck. Her four-berth layout with galley and enclosed head compartment offers comfortable cruising accommodations.
Cady has received much recent attention, including a complete strip, refasten, and refinish from the waterline to the rabbet. New bobstay, additional bronze deck hardware, cleaning and minor repairs to sails, and complete replacement of all standing rigging are among the other notable items.
Her mast is a painted elliptical-section aluminum extrusion. Main and staysail booms are painted spruce. Her systems have been deliberately kept as simple and reliable as her rig. Auxiliary power is provided by a Yanmar 3GM30F, and her electronics suite consists of a 7” Garmin plotter, a VHF radio, and a depth sounder. Galley equipment is a two-burner alcohol stove with a large Yeti cooler in a built-in alcove.
From Cady’s beautiful clipper bow to her shapely transom, from her keel bolts to her masthead, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a celebration of the joy to be found in high-standard workmanship, high-quality fittings, and decades of ongoing respect.
